He would learn to despise the two words, and never make a problem when someone called out his nickname.
But, Pepper’s older brother, who has flat feet, is made ineligible for military service, and his father is forced to join him in his place. Pepper then hears the Bible verse “Truly, I tell you, If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, this mountain will move from where to where'” (Matthew 17.20). Pepper is determined to build enough faith to return his father back to his home. Nevertheless, as his close friend and mentor Father Oliver tells him, faith is not a factor for anyone who harbors hatred. Pepper is instructed by Father Oliver to make friends with Hashimoto, a Japanese man named Hashimoto. Little Boy HD
At first initially, the anti-Japanese feeling Pepper has absorbed and has become a norm in his culture is what makes him reluctant to follow the advice of his mentor, but as he gets to become acquainted with Hashimoto begins to appreciate their friendship and learns from Hashimoto to take on people who try to bully him over his height. Father Oliver handed Pepper an agenda of things to do. Pepper’s father is missing in action and his mother Emily Watson struggles to keep her family unit despite these extremely difficult times. London and his brother and Sam who is one of the townpeople who lost a son visit Hashimoto’s home and assault him in the evening and he is taken to hospital. London was initially detained but Hashimoto decides to not press charges and he is released.
An Army representative brings the news that Pepper’s father is killed and is burial in the Philippines. Hashimoto is at the O’Hare Cemetery memorial service to pay tribute to. Pepper and Hashimoto discuss their losses together and believe in something. Pepper goes back to the cemetery to visit his father’s grave and place the list over his grave marker. Pepper along with his mother go to the town doctor. Dr. Fox tries to hit on her and invite her over to the house in the evening, under the pretense of talking about what could possibly be the reason for Pepper’s diminutive stature.
A spokesperson from the Army came later to inform her that her husband hadn’t been killed. The man who was killed had stolen the father’s boots, and had his dog tags attached to the laces, when he fell after being shot and was mistakenly identified as the father of Pepper. The family leaves town for a visit to James in the hospital. Pepper takes her the boots James had been looking at for a while, which Pepper bought him after the fight. They find that James suffers from mild amnesia following having suffered injuries to his head. Pepper introduces James as his “partner” and presents him with the present. James is holding the boot, then hugs Pepper and kisses the faces of of his family. The entire family sits around his chair and share a group hug, before returning him to O’Hare.
