Vigilante Eddie Marino (Robert Forster) is a factory worker in New York City. Vickie ( Rutanya) is his wife. Scott ( Dante Joseph). Eddie’s friend and co-worker, Nick ( Fred Williamson) as well as two coworkers, Burke and Ramon, have formed an anonymous vigilante group as Nick and his group are fed up with the lack of security in their neighborhood. Nick and his group are also dissatisfied with the police, because the police have a tendency to fail to protect their citizens. Nick’s “group” is supported by many residents in the neighborhood who indirectly help them. For instance, a local thug chases down a young woman and takes her to the top of an apartment building. The thug then steals and kills the woman. An elderly woman who is witness to the thug says nothing to the police, but she points to Nick and his group on the following day. Nick and his friends forcibly take the thug off of the streets, and then put the thug in their van before they take off. Later, the thug is found dead in a field with his legs and arms broken, and his head smashed into.
Eddie returns from work to find Vickie wounded and Scott murdered during the course of a home invasion. This was in retaliation for Vickie’s assistance in kicking a gas station attendant earlier. Frederico “Rico” Melendez ( Willie Colon) is a member of a street gang in Puerto Rico, is detained. Assistant District Attorney Mary Fletcher ( Carol Lynley) is seeking a long prison sentence, as New York does not have the death penalty. Nick is trying to convince Eddie to join the vigilante organization however, Eddie refuses to accept Nick’s offer and would rather let the courts deal with Rico. Rico gets released from prison after Prago (Don Blakely), his right-hand man is bribed by Judge Sinclair (Vincent Beck) as well as Eisenburg ( Joe Spinell) the attorney for Rico. Eddie, furious at the judge’s decision, is sentenced for 30 days in jail. Vigilante HD
The vigilante group follows Eddie to his cell, where he’s in prison. After the arrest of a minor drug dealer ( Frank Pesce), and torturing his supplier they finally find an extremely high-ranking New York mayor’s official. Eddie becomes friends with Rake ( Woody Strade) while in prison and he saves the latter from being sexually assaulted during showers. Once Eddie is released from prison and is released, he joins the vigilante group in order that it can locate and eliminate Rico, Prago, and Judge Sinclair. Eddie, Nick and Ramon confront Rico in his shady apartment. Rico claims that Eddie killed his son, but the culprit was Prago. An unmoved Eddie shoots his body however, he narrowly avoids death when Rico’s girlfriend is attempting to shoot him; she injures Burke instead, and Nick killed her in self-defense. Prago thinks Rico was murdered by dirty cops after he learns of Rico’s death. Prago along with his gang attack an officer’s car, and kill both police officers.
Vickie is released from the hospital, but refuses to come home to Eddie and leaves him, unable to be at the exact place where their son was murdered. Eddie was also dismayed by his conduct in killing a man, and fearful that the gang might track him down and he decides to go away. Nick fails to persuade him to fight. When Eddie leaves Brooklyn He recognizes Prago and follows him by the ground. Prago quickly spots Eddie and they shoot at each other. Prago takes over a car and Eddie takes a car to follow his. The chase leads to an industrial dockyard in the area where both cars crash. Eddie follows Prago again on foot, and then confronts Prago at a storage tower. Prago is insane and mad to his last, admits to having killed Scott and demands Eddie to kill the man. Eddie then throws Prago off the building and Prago dies. In the next scene, Eddie plants a bomb in Judge Sinclair’s car, then watches from an eagle’s view when it explodes, killing Sinclair. Eddie is then able to leave the scene and travels to an unknown location.
